Who teaches the classes?
Our classes are taught by native speakers from China with years of professional experience teaching Chinese to young children.

How many children are in each class?
The classes are limited to 12 children (and their caregivers). It is a lively, yet intimate, environment.

What ages are the classes for? Is my child too young to learn Chinese?
Classes are for children ages 6 months to 5 years old. Most of our classes are “family-style” and mixed-ages, which creates a dynamic learning environment for children to learn at their own pace. Experts agree that the period between 2 and 6 years old is the most natural and productive time for language acquisition. Our classes follow a structured playgroup format so that both older children who are already familiar with a classroom setting and younger children starting the socialization process can benefit.

If you would like to discuss your child’s individual needs, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

What are the classes like?
XiaoBao Chinese classes teach an original curriculum created by our teachers especially for young children. The classes combine music, art, stories and movement to expose children to the Chinese language and culture. In each class, we will introduce an age-appropriate topic such as body parts, animals, shapes, colors or family members. Above all, our goal is to teach children that learning Chinese is a lot of fun!

My child already knows some Chinese. Is this class appropriate for him/her?
Yes, our classes are comprised of both students who are being exposed to Chinese for the first time as well as students who already speak Chinese and are looking for a fun way to improve her skills with peers. Each class focuses on introducing key new vocabulary words and our goal is that the children will develop an ear for Chinese tones as well as acquire a small vocabulary by the end of the semester. However, we recommend ongoing participation in this or other Chinese classes in order to build upon newly acquired vocabulary and work towards life-long fluency.

How much Chinese will my child really learn?
Developing fluency in Chinese (or any foreign language) can take many years, even for young, rapid learners. By participating in our classes, however, even the youngest learners will develop an ear for the nuances and tones of the Chinese language as well as an understanding of some key vocabulary words. Older, verbal students should leave the classes with not only more of an appreciation for Chinese culture, but also a cursory knowledge of Chinese tones and some vocabulary. Your child’s progress will also depend on the level of exposure she receives outside of our weekly classes. We recommend that students repeat the class until they are able to understand the majority of what is taught in Chinese.

Do you offer take-home materials for students?
Yes. At the end of each class, we will provide students with material about the vocabulary taught during that class so that the learning can continue outside of the classroom.

Do you offer drop-off classes?
No. We recommend that a parent or caregiver accompany the children to all classes, even if your child is independent and used to attending school on his own.

What is your refund policy?
Classes are fully refundable (less $25 registration fee) up until one week prior to the first day of class. After that, classes are 50% refundable up until 2 weeks after the start of the first class. No refunds are allowed after 2 weeks from the start of the first class.

Can I sit in on a class before signing up?
No, unfortunately, we do not offer trial classes. However, if you are concerned about the appropriateness of the class for your child, please do not hesitate to contact us with further questions about the program.

Do you offer classes for older children? What about private and/or group lessons?
We are currently planning classes for older children so please let us know if you are interested. We can also arrange private and group lessons so please contact us for more information.
